If you are a grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend, who is planning on giving a pet as a Christmas gift, Don'T!
Christmas is not the ideal day for a new pet to be introduced into a family.
Granted, the portrait of happy children in their Pjs; looking a puppy or kitten sitting under the Christmas tree, wearing a big red bow, is a excellent Norman Rockwell memory. But in real life, what happens to that pet in the weeks and months to succeed is more important.
All too often, once the hub-hub of the day is over and reality sets in, it just a matter of weeks or months before that unique Christmas surprise, finds itself in a recovery or shelter!
What you should reconsider prior to giving a pet for Christmas are:
Do they unmistakably want a pet?
Is it the right breed for that single family?
Are they willing to accept the work and responsibilities of the needs of that pet?
How receptive is the pet You have chosen, to the family?
Before springing the grand Christmas surprise, check with the parents. Since they are the ones that will most likely be "stuck" with all the work and responsibilities, are they financially and emotionally prepared? Pets are high-priced and a lot of work! If it is a puppy you are giving, are you willing to contain a gift certificate for Puppy Kindergarten training as part of the gift? How about paying for the first vet visit and next set of scheduled puppy shots?
Just because a single kitten or puppy touches your heart, doesn't mean it's the excellent pet for person else. Selecting a pet is an extremely personal experience. It is also a two-way street. A conscientious person will not only reconsider their feelings, they will also reconsider the feelings of the animal. Many times, in the excitement of the event, the wrong pet is chosen.
Breeds have their pros and cons. It is important the type of pet chosen, is one compatible with the lifestyle of the family. A house of couch potatoes, whose idea of exercise and adventure is watching it on Tv, need a breed that requires itsybitsy to no exercise. A excellent match! On the other hand, have a Type A, on-the-go house and that same dog will be like a quadrilateral peg in a round hole. It doesn't work!
People need to do their homework before acquiring a pet. Being knowledgeable about the personalities and needs of a breed is a must. Shelters and rescues are overflowing with pets that did not fit a family's lifestyle. For all concerned, even the pet, lifestyles have to match.
Is the house ready for a pet? Many times, adding a pet into the equation puts an extra burden on an already stressed family.
Soiling in the house, chewing (teething), and out of operate (due to lack of training) are the three most common reasons given to shelters and rescues when population surrender their pets.
It is wiser to wait until the children are older and capable of assuming some of the responsibilities and work of that difficult transition period. By sharing the burden, there is less resentment.
What happens if the pet you have chosen is not receptive to the family? It may be hard to believe, but not every pet is thrilled with the population they live with! For a association to be a win-win situation, the pet must be as keen to be a part of that single family, as the house is to share their life with that pet!
If the pet is not happy, what's the alternative for it? It may not be a Christmas story ending.
Bottom line: Let population pick their own pets. Be the bighearted bearer of the special Christmas gift if you must. Pay for the pet and the introductory expenses; but let the house and the animal rule if they are right for each other.
Christmas is Not the Day to Give a Pet!

Professional organizers and helpful-hint sources often advise storage solutions such as shelves above doors and in corners, hooks on the backs of doors, and peg-board or tools and small appliances. They are masters at maximizing every square inch of a closet with bins, baskets, shelf dividers, and manifold hanging rods. What they don't realize is that, from a feng shui perspective, these techniques can cause as many problems as they solve.
For good feng shui, it's important to leave some of your storage space unused, for doors to open all the way, and to aim for optical simplicity. As you work toward achieving the organizer's dream of a place for all and all in its place, keep these guidelines in mind:
With these easy guidelines in mind, you can select storage solutions that will keep your space tidy and create good feng shui in your home. 6 Crazy Ideas to Put the Fun Back in Your house Christmas Card and house Holiday PhotoIs this your typical morning "wake up kids" dialog?
"Well, aren't you on the ball today! Holy moley, you're dressed already. What a great kid." (smiles, whistling, high fives ensue) If it is, then read no supplementary and congratulations.
If it's more like this...
Time to wake up! Sweetie, get up... Get up, please. C'mon now, up, up, up. You're going to be late for school.... (5 minutes later) Don't make me come in there. Get...up...Now.
Do you well need that? Every. Single. Morning. No one does. It's not only stressful on moms & dads, but think how diminutive miss cranky bottom's day goes when it starts with a yelling match.
Here are tips on how to wake up your heavy sleeper with less fuss:
Bedtime:
1. First, get them to bed at a decent hour so they get adequate sleep. Agreeing to the National Sleep Foundation, 3 - 5 year olds need 11 to 13 hours per day, 5 - 12 year olds need 9 - 11 hours per day and after 12 years old we're seeing at about 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours a day, although late teens wish a diminutive more, even if they aren't getting it.
2. There is always that bedtime/wake time adjustment when vacation hours turn to school hours. About a week before the big adjustment, start planning earlier morning activities that force them on track.
3. No matter how old your child is, get them into a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
4. A bedtime routine is vital to good sleeping habits. Light snack, bath, Pjs, brush teeth, read a story, make sure the room is quiet and comfortable, into bed, lights out, nighty night and you're out.
5. Make sure they know what time they are supposed to wake up. This helps them 'set' their natural alarm clock (circadian rhythm) to finally wake up on their own, or at least start waking up closer to the thorough time.
6. Tv stays Off at bedtime. They'll get a great night's sleep without the background noise. In fact (and I didn't know this until I found it on the National Sleep Foundation's site) even watching Tv close to bedtime has been related with bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, sleep anxiety and sleeping fewer hours. They suggest keeping both the Tv and the computer out of the bedroom completely.
7. Step them away from the Coke. Or anyone else with caffeine in it.
Wake-up:
1. Make waking up fun! When they're little, put some pizazz in the morning routine. First turn on the light and, with a big smile, say, "Wake up, you silly goose!" or something equally endearing. Then, without waiting for a reaction, go directly into a made-up song, a goofy dance, a smothering of kisses or a diplomatic tickle. When their feet hit the floor, turn on their beloved music. If they are lollygaggers, then challenge them to a timed dressing session. Here's a good one... "If you're ready in xx minutes I'll let you pack your own lunch (or something else that needs doing, like laundry...kidding)". As every parent knows, bribery works too. Mix it up.
2. If you don't wake them yourself, the right alarm clock is Key to getting off on the right foot. I suggest the Sonic Alert clocks that let them wake up to sounds, a shaking/vibrating bed, flashing lights or all three. For heavy sleepers, try the Sonic Bomb. There's even a heart shaped one called the Sonic Boom Sweetheart Alarm Clock for your diminutive princess. There is something for everyone. I use the Sonic Shaker transportable Vibrating travel Alarm at home and it gradually vibrates my pillow when it's time to wake up. Excellent for those sensitive to noise.
3. No Snooze function is allowed. Never use it. Tape it up so it can't be used, anyone it takes. Snoozing just makes you more tired and grumpy.
4. If they tend to wake up and go right back to sleep, put the alarm clock on the other side of the room. They'll have to physically get out of bed to turn it off. Maybe you put it on the bathroom counter, so they can start their day from there.
5. Let in the morning light. Don't make them wake up in a cave. It's tough when you're getting up before the sun comes up, but even a diminutive bit of light helps.
Hopefully these tips can help you avoid the morning wake-up battles, and the whole family can get the day off to a great start.
